Mass Balance

STS have contributed data and analysis of the fruit and vegetable sector to the recently published Biffaward report "UK Food and Drink Processing: Mass Balance". The report forms part of the Biffaward Programme on Sustainable Resource Use, which aims to provide accessible, well researched information about the flows of different resources through the UK economy based either singly or in combination on regions, material streams and economic sectors.

Information about material resource flows through the economy is of fundamental importance to the cost effective management of resource flows, especially at the stage when those resources become waste.

This particular report is intended to inform key stakeholders - that include food processors, waste management service providers, technology providers, local authorities and central government of key aspects of resource flows within the food processing sector. These include the amount and nature of various streams (particularly wastes), identified needs related to food processing wastes, issues preventing or slowing the adoption of new practices and case studies of current industrial practice and emerging approaches to waste minimisation.
